Chemal EM-5S

Chemal EM-5S is a proprietary blend of cetyl/oleyl alcohol ethoxylates. This product may be used for formulating soluble and semi-synthetic fluids for metalworking applications.  Chemal EM-5S may be used for the emulsification of both paraffinic and naphthenic mineral oils.

The product is a near colorless liquid which is highly oil soluble and water dispersible. Chemal EM-5S is free of phenol, sulfur, and phosphorus and is compatible with traditional metalworking additives including amines, TOFA, corrosion inhibitors, biocides, and defoamers. Good blooming attributes are readily achievable with this product which inherently produces a more stable emulsion. It may also be used with both soft and hard water sources.

Chemal EM-5S has an HLB of 8.3 and is sold in a 100% active form. Over time and under cold conditions, the product may haze and/or build viscosity, but this can be easily overcome with low heat and gentle agitation. Chemal EM-5S is lower in foam than many traditional emulsifiers and also provides additional lubricity based on a long carbon chain initiating alcohol.
